Nothing beats the feeling of a fresh, new, springy carpet under your bare feet. Even tired and worn decor can look alive again with new contemporary carpet. Unfortunately, however, that just-laid look and feel doesn’t tend to last too long. If you’re a pet owner or have young children running around, stains and general wear and tear can seem to magically appear overnight. And unlike a dirty car (or dog!) that you can take through a car wash in a manner of minutes, properly cleaning your carpet takes regular effort and commitment.
Regular cleaning is fundamental for carpets to appear fresher for longer. In addition to vacuuming at least once or twice a week, it’s vital to clean spills as they occur and to invest in professional carpet cleaning at least once a year to properly lift ingrained dirt. Below we’ve listed some tips to help keep your carpet looking cleaner and lasting for longer.
Stop dirt in its tracks
As dirt comes from outside, it’s likely that your shoes and/or pet’s paws are bringing dirt into your home and are trekking it across your carpet. You could consider making the inside of your home a ‘shoeless’ one and placing a basket or low shelves for shoes to be removed and stored close to your front door. For pets, there are towel-mats you can purchase from your local pet store that can be placed at the entrances your pets use. They are designed to be dirt traps, especially for muddy paws.
Consider rugs for high-traffic areas
Even the cleanest carpet in the world is going to look worse for wear under heavy use. To avoid this, you could consider laying rugs for your high-traffic areas such as landings, family rooms and hallways. A rug can add pizazz to your home as a design feature and its best quality is that it’s easily replaceable (unlike a carpet). It’s far better for rugs to take the brunt of foot traffic over a carpet that you’re trying to keep in the best condition.
Use carpet protectors under furniture
Heavy furniture can cause significant indentations, damaging carpet integrity and ageing your carpet before its time. Ideally, you should aim to rearrange your furniture at least every year, even if that means shifting items by a matter of 10cm. This could also be a catalyst to overhaul your room and freshen things up by exposing new and undamaged areas of your carpet. It’s also worth protecting your carpet by using small rubber mats for the base of the legs of your furniture. This keeps your carpet safe from damage and helps contributes to a longer lifespan.
Avoid loose ends
Loose ends can be your carpet’s undoing and it pays to deal with these as soon as you notice them. Remove loose ends when they arise, by trimming them before the problem worsens. Adding a plastic floor runner in areas where your carpet meets tiles or wooden floors can also prevent loose ends that could become frayed over time.
