How to keep your carpet clean with pets

Though we all love our cats and dogs, we certainly don’t love the stains they leave when they have an accident, right?  Dirty carpet is usually the most obvious indicator of furry friends in the house. Here are some tips to prevent messes in the home and to keep your carpet looking fresh.

1. Place a towel mat at each entrance

As most dirt comes from outside, place a towel mat at each entrance for your dog or cat. You can quickly wipe off your pet’s paws before they begin tracking dirt around the house. Most pets will refuse at first, but ultimately your pet will learn that he can’t re-enter the house until you wipe his paws. This small routine can make a big difference. Clean paws can’t dirty carpet.

2. Clean any pet urine as quickly as possible

If you’ve been out for a few hours, chances are that Fido’s urine stain may have been sitting for a while. As soon as you discover it, it’s important to clean it right away. If you wait too long, bacteria can start to grow in the affected area, which leads to unpleasant odours.  Blot with a clean towel or rag to stop the urine from seeping deeper into the carpet.

3. Don’t play jokes that scare the bejeebers out of your pets

Well-meaning jokes have the potential to backfire (quite literally) as the following video demonstrates.

4. Don’t use products that contain ammonia

As cat urine contains ammonia in it, so it will make your cat repeat the offence in the same spot.  In addition, ammonia and other high alkaline solutions can cause permanent damage to wool carpet and rugs.

5. Do use bicarbonate soda

For a urine spot that has already dried, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the soiled section, and then let it sit for a couple of hours before vacuuming.  This will also help with removing lingering odours.

6. Do vacuum regularly

This one is obvious, but it also makes the biggest difference. Non-pet owners should vacuum their home at least weekly. However, when you add an animal into the equation, it is highly recommended that you vacuum at least 2-3 times during the week. Vacuuming will remove about 80% of dirt, particles, and spills. In addition to vacuuming the floor, be sure to vacuum upholstery and tile. If these areas aren’t clean, pet hair will just transfer around the home as your family walks from room to room.

10. Do call the experts

Although do-it-yourself home remedies do a decent job of minimising damage, few, if any, completely remove the stain and odour from an accident. MasterClean Carpet Care can professionally clean your carpet and transform it into the fresh, odour-free carpet it once was.

And finally, some potty training might be a wise course of action. MasterClean can clean the mess but if you need to fix the fundamental problem, call a pet trainer such as Sankiri Dog Training in Melbourne.  A trusted partner of ours.
