It’s challenging keeping your carpets clean, especially living in a busy household with children and pets. General wear and tear is to be expected over the years, but stains and spills can result in your carpet looking much older than it is. The best way to look after a carpet is avoid causing problems in the first place. Below, we’ve compiled some tips to help you prevent the worst kinds of damage to your carpet.
DON’T use a hot iron on the carpet
Whether you’re using the carpet as an ironing board, or you accidentally drop a hot iron onto the carpet. When an iron hits the carpet you’re at risk of burning the fibres leaving an ugly scorch mark that won’t come out.
DON’T drag heavy furniture across the carpet
While it might seem harmless to the carpet, you can permanently damage the strips under the carpet that help keep it in place. This causes damage to the carpet backing and ripples or dents that can’t be removed.
DON’T drop wax or incense ash
Incense ash can remain extremely hot for several hours and can be dangerous if it lands on carpet. When burning stick incense, be sure to dab the tip in some water when putting it out to ensure it won’t reignite. Always use trays to catch failing ash or wax.
DON’T use hair dye or nail polish near your carpet
A good hair dye is not meant to come out, so it will also be hard to remove from carpet. Likewise, nail polish is difficult to remove and nail polish remover contains harsh chemicals that can easily stain carpets.
DON’T use harsh chemicals
Using bleach, turpentine, WD40, eucalyptus oil or vinegar to clean carpet can cause more problems than they fix. This includes permanent discolouration of fibres and ongoing odours.
