Australia Day is a great time to catch up with family and friends, traditionally over a BBQ. But along with the party crowd, comes a bigger risk of carpet stains. Whether it’s a lamington or a beer that gets knocked over, food and drink stains are inevitable when you invite guests onto carpeted areas. Below we take a look at some key survival tips for your carpet this Australia Day.
Timing is everything
Stains if left ignored, will cling to the fibres in your carpet as they dry out, making them much harder to completely remove later. Ideally, you should blot stains immediately, using warm water and white cotton towels.
Blot, blot and blot again
First blot up excess with a dry towel, then dampen (do not soak) with warm water and blot again with a dry towel. Repeat until spot is removed. If you see no further improvement stop what you are doing – you have done all you can. Don’t be tempted to rub the spot roughly as you can potentially damage carpet fibres.
Try bicarbonate soda
Baking soda has alkaline properties that when sprinkled over your carpet, works to absorb any lingering moisture and smells. All you need to do is sprinkle the baking soda over the affected area then vacuum it up.
Don’t make it worse
No matter how colourful the stain, don’t use strong cleaning chemicals like bleach, turpentine, WD40, eucalyptus oil or vinegar as these can remove dyes, tarnish vividly coloured carpets, and can also damage carpet fibres.
